Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Phonics

Children are explicitly taught Phonics from Nursery using the Government phonics scheme - Letters and Sounds. We run parent workshops in order to support parents in helping their children at home. The school is very well resourced with phonic games making use of ICT where appropriate. Children's phonics are assessed regularly and children who need support are offered individual/group tutoring. All staff and reading volunteers at St Bede's are fully trained in the teaching of phonics. Phonics is taught through a wealth of listening activities including songs, stories and rhymes.

All About Poland
The children in Year 1 were visited by Mrs Wolniewicz (Jakub's mum).  Mrs Wolniewicz came in to tell us all about Poland, so that we could compare it with Jarrow.  We found out that homes in Poland have different taps and plug sockets.  We also found out that Poland has some of the same shops as us.  Mrs Wolniewicz also told us all about Easter in Poland.  We found out that that children in Poland receive Easter eggs from the Easter bunny too.  We also found out that families make special Easter baskets filled with food, which are blessed by a priest.  We got to taste some of the delicious cakes and biscuits that are made in Jakub's home.

The Local Area

Whilst investigating the local area, Year 1 went for a walk around Jarrow, taking photographs of attractive features and unattractive features.  We expressed our personal views by talking about things that we liked and things that we didn’t like.
