Children are explicitly taught Phonics from Nursery using the Government phonics scheme - Letters and Sounds. We run parent workshops in order to support parents in helping their children at home. The school is very well resourced with phonic games making use of ICT where appropriate. Children's phonics are assessed regularly and children who need support are offered individual/group tutoring. All staff and reading volunteers at St Bede's are fully trained in the teaching of phonics. Phonics is taught through a wealth of listening activities including songs, stories and rhymes.
